Cost Ranges by Vinyl Style
Per-foot pricing at 6 ft height (the most common residential height) including materials and installation. Ranch Rail pricing shown at 4 ft, its most common height.
Privacy
$38 - $50 / ft
Solid panels with no gaps between pickets. The most popular choice for backyards where visibility from neighbors is the primary concern.
Semi-Privacy
$32 - $42 / ft
Spaced pickets or alternating panels that allow some airflow and light. A good middle ground between full privacy and an open look.
Picket
$28 - $36 / ft
Traditional spaced pickets in a classic style. Works well for front yards and decorative borders where full privacy is not needed.
Ranch Rail
$18 - $25 / ft (4 ft)
Horizontal rails without pickets. Common for property boundaries, farms, and open-lot perimeters where visibility matters more than privacy.
Shadowbox
$36 - $48 / ft
Alternating pickets on both sides of the rail create a finished look from either direction. Offers partial privacy with a premium appearance.
Why Non-White Vinyl Costs More
White vinyl is the baseline price because white PVC requires the least pigment processing. Colored vinyl (tan, gray, khaki) uses UV-stabilized pigments that are blended into the raw material before extrusion.
These pigments prevent fading over 20 to 30 years of sun exposure. The added material cost translates to a 10 to 15 percent premium at the per-foot level.
The premium is worth it for most homeowners. Colored vinyl never needs painting, and the color runs through the entire panel thickness. Scratches do not reveal a different color underneath.

Vinyl vs Wood: 10-Year Cost Comparison
Vinyl costs more upfront. Over 10 years, the math shifts. Wood requires staining, repairs, and eventual replacement that vinyl does not.
Vinyl Fence (6 ft Privacy)
Expected lifespan: 30+ years.
Wood Fence (6 ft Privacy)
Expected lifespan: 15-20 years. Replacement cost resets the clock.
At the 15-year mark, wood typically needs full replacement. Vinyl is still standing. The second wood fence pushes the 20-year total cost well above vinyl for most projects.
